Things to Do in Damaraland

Damaraland sprawls across northwestern Namibia as one of the country's most geologically dramatic and culturally significant regions. This semi-arid wilderness actually encompasses several different landscapes - from the rust-colored granite domes and ancient river valleys to the scattered settlements where Himba and Herero communities maintain their traditional ways of life. You'll find some of Africa's most important rock art sites here, along with desert-adapted elephants that have learned to navigate this harsh terrain with remarkable intelligence. The region feels genuinely remote - the kind of place where you might drive for hours without seeing another vehicle, then suddenly encounter a small group of elephants crossing a dry riverbed.

Dining options in Damaraland are limited to lodge restaurants and the occasional roadside stop, but the quality at established lodges tends to be surprisingly good. Most accommodations serve hearty buffet-style meals featuring local game meats, fresh vegetables, and traditional potjiekos stews cooked over open fires. The town of Khorixas has a few basic restaurants and a well-stocked supermarket for self-catering, while Uis offers limited takeaway options. If you're camping or staying in self-catering accommodation, stock up on supplies in Windhoek or Swakopmund before heading into the region.

The dry season from May to October offers the most comfortable temperatures and best wildlife viewing opportunities, as animals concentrate around permanent water sources. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (20-25°C) but nights can be surprisingly cold, especially in winter months. The wet season from November to April brings occasional thunderstorms and can make some roads impassable, though the landscape transforms dramatically with green vegetation and wildflowers. For photography, the shoulder seasons of April-May and September-October provide excellent light conditions without the extreme temperatures of peak summer or winter.
