Namibia Airport Transfer Guide (2026) - All Options & Tips

Airport transfers in Namibia: taxi, bus, train, and shuttle options from the airport to the city center, with costs and journey times in Namibia.

Landing in Namibia feels different. No metro, no scheduled bus, no rail. Formal public transport from airport to city simply does not exist. Your choices are private, and you choose early. Pre-booked lodge shuttles, shared transfers, or private hire. Shared shuttles cost less. Private transfers cost more yet drop you at your door. Arrange before you land. Self-drive is king here. Namibia's roads invite it. Collect your rental at the terminal and skip the transfer puzzle. Use the booking widget for live prices. Always ask your lodge if they collect guests. Most do.

Helpful Tips

Rent a car before leaving Windhoek. Public transport does not reach Etosha, Sossusvlei, or most national parks.

Shared combis (minibuses) are the primary intercity transport between major towns and cost a fraction of a private taxi.

Fill up at every fuel station you pass. On desert routes, the next one can be 200 km or more away.

Book a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle if your itinerary includes gravel-road destinations like Damaraland or the Skeleton Coast.

Common Scams to Avoid

Ignore the touts. Unofficial taxi touts at Hosea Kutako International Airport linger inside the arrivals hall. They quote fares well above the standard rate for the roughly 45 km drive into Windhoek. Walk outside to the clearly marked official taxi rank. Better yet, arrange an airport transfer through your accommodation in advance.

Stand your ground. Car rental supplemental insurance upselling is common at Namibia's airport desks. Staff push pricey 'gravel road' or 'off-road' add-ons, sometimes claiming they are compulsory. Review your existing rental agreement and travel insurance first. Ask for exclusions in writing. Only then decide.

Decline politely. Unsolicited luggage assistance demanding payment happens in the arrivals area. Helpers grab bags without warning, then insist on cash. Offer too little and they turn aggressive. This tactic appears across southern Africa, not only Namibia. Just say no from the start.
